Carole Mallory: Whose Wrath? The Wrath of the Titans

A two-headed monster breathing fire is the first monster to greet you in 3D. A terrifying beginning to Wrath of the Titans, sequel to Clash of the Titans as this dragon- like monster plunders a town only to be outwitted by Sam Worthington who plays Perseus in grand style. A few stabs with a magical knife as Perseus jumps on one of this monster's heads and kills him only after 10 minutes into this film. Special effects are splendid as is this story, straight out of Greek mythology. What better motivation for screenwriters David Johnson and Dan Mazeau than the Greeks, and what a tour de force this film is for action aficionados.

Director Jonathan Liebesman (Battle Los Angeles ) keeps the drama intense, which seems an impossibility considering the opening of the film, but the ending is a crash and burn drama of great magnitude as Kronos, the youngest of the Titans and god of time, rears his evil head to threaten destruction of the universe.

The film begins a decade after Perseus's defeat of the monstrous Kraken; he is attempting to live a quiet life in a fishing village where he is raising his 10-year-old son Helius (John Bell). But the gods will not allow Perseus his well deserved peace. He must battle a band of Cyclops and eventually fight flaming four-armed warriors with two torsos.

Liam Neeson, a perfect Zeus, is captured by his evil son Ares (Edgar Ramirez) and his brother Hades (Ralph Fiennes) to be banished to the evils of the underworld.

"Our people have stopped praying and we have lost our power," Zeus laments. Perseus mounts his savior Pegasus and flies to enlist the help of warrior Queen Andromeda (Rosamund Pike) whose hairdresser should get star billing, as during the near destruction of the universe, her ringlets remain tack. (A little mud in her hair would have brought this production back down to earth.)

Poseidon's demigod son Agenor (Toby Kebbell) and fallen God Hephaestus played with panache, verve, and wit by Bill Nighy unite to rescue Zeus from the cavernous underworld. Flying horse Pegasus makes a bad landing and Perseus falls off of him which lends humor to Pegasus's undisputed godly powers.

But Hades and Ares have made a deal with the imprisoned Titans, led by Kronos, and captured their father Zeus. The Titans strength increases as they drain Zeus of his power. As Hades tortures Zeus, he says to him with disgust, "You're sweating like a human. Next it will be tears."

Perseus must save the day and the universe from the evils of the Titans of the underworld led by Kronos. Can a demigod triumph over a Titan? See this film and find out. Amidst all its terror, Wrath of the Titans is fun and a good watch.

Santorum's Last Stand or Romney's Time to Seal the Deal?

CHICAGO - Basking in the glow of his commanding win in Illinois on Tuesday night, Mitt Romney delivered his victory speech in Schaumburg, Ill., but it may be another? state 40 miles north? that?once and for all seals the deal for the GOP front-runner: Wisconsin.

While Romney focused his?victory speech on a general election showdown with President Obama and his top strategist Eric Fehrnstrom called on other candidates to "step aside," the Republican primary seems destined to continue at least through April 3, when Wisconsin, along with Maryland and the District of Columbia, heads to the polls. It is there that Romney will have a real chance to end what has been a long, drawn-out primary.

With a 300 delegate lead over his closest rival, Rick Santorum - 563 to 263 - Romney, as evidenced by his speech in Schaumburg, is eager to focus his attacks on Obama rather than his fellow Republican hopefuls. Romney's resounding triumph in Illinois - he took 47 percent of the vote compared?with 35 percent for Santorum, a difference of more than 100,000 votes - gives the former Massachusetts governor a compelling argument for Santorum, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul to exit the race. But not one of the three has shown any inclination to do so. Gingrich and Paul, at this point, have become irrelevant in the primary, but Santorum still holds out faint hope of making a comeback.?If he is to pull that off,? he has to score an unexpected victory in the very near future.

?Santorum, it seems, will likely win in Louisiana on Saturday, but that will do little to change the momentum of the race. Come April 3, the former Pennsylvania senator will be hard-pressed to find a lot of support in Maryland and is not even on the ballot in D.C. After that, the next round of primaries does not take place until April 24, when New York, Connecticut, Delaware, Rhode Island and Pennsylvania all vote. Only Pennsylvania is? remotely friendly territory for Santorum, but even?there the voters ?kicked him out of the Senate after?one term. It's not exactly a great home-field advantage.

That all makes April 3 in Wisconsin the last best chance for Santorum to get back into the race. Win the Badger State and Santorum will be back in the conversation, at least until April 24. Lose, and he will merely be an afterthought going forward, a dead man walking. Santorum will waste little time in making his case to Wisconsin voters. He heads there Saturday to address a conference in Milwaukee. Romney is also expected to visit the state later this month, while his wife, Ann, will campaign in Madison and Milwaukee on Thursday.

If past is prologue, Santorum will know that the road ahead is an uphill climb. In the past three Midwestern states to vote - Illinois, Ohio and Michigan - Santorum has suffered crucial defeats. In each state, Romney had better organization and far more money, a lethal combination for his rivals. In Illinois, for instance, Santorum failed to qualify for the ballot in four of the state's 18 congressional districts and was outspent by an eight to?one ?margin statewide and a 21 to one margin in the Chicago area. Making matters worse, Santorum did himself no favors by declaring that he did not care about the unemployment rate - this in a state where the jobless rate is a full point higher than the national average. What had once appeared to be a close race in Illinois ended up being anything but.

?Romney and his allies have already started to flex their financial muscle in Wisconsin. His super PAC - Restore Our Future - has bought around $1.3 million worth of airtime in the state, with ads on the air dating back to March 15. The Santorum campaign, by contrast, has? shelled out only $54,000 in Wisconsin to date, and his super PAC - the Red, White and Blue Fund - has yet to spend a dime there.

That does not bode well for Santorum's chances in a state that has 42 delegates on offer and the potential to snuff out any hope he has of pulling off a shocking upset. Another factor working against him is that Romney is viewed as the favorite in Waukesha County, a wealthy, educated area just to the west of Milwaukee. Romney so far has used his strength in the most urban areas of Illinois, Michigan and Ohio to catapult him to statewide victories. In Illinois, it was the Chicago area. In Michigan, around Detroit. And in Ohio, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Columbus. In Wisconsin next month, Romney will hope to replicate that magic in Milwaukee and Madison.

Do not be surprised if he succeeds. And if Romney does take the Badger State - as well as D.C. and Maryland that same day - then it will be fair to declare the GOP race over once and for all, even if Santorum, Gingrich ?and Paul continue to argue otherwise.

Four Things to Consider When Choosing a Pool Contractor

Your old pool has been a silent witness to countless family gatherings, pool parties, and barbeques. It has given you countless memorable moments. After many years, you begin to see cracks on its fa?ade; stains, damaged finishes, irregular water levels, these are telltale signs that you will soon need to get your pool remodeled.

It is never a wise decision to fix a pool problem by yourself, regardless of the numerous tutorials and videos you've seen. It can be a total waste of money if you do it wrong. The question you should be asking is how to look for a good pool repair contractor. Here are some guidelines that will help you in making your choice.

Word-of-Mouth

Choosing the ideal pool contractor requires careful thought and consideration if you want the job done right, on schedule, and within your budget. Ask your family and friends about pool contractors they would highly recommend. Word-of-mouth is probably the most trustworthy form of advertisement a pool contractor can get.

Job Estimates

Once you've made a list of pool contractors, call them up and set an appointment for them to come to your place. Have them come one at a time, though, for ethical reasons. When getting a job estimate, you should have it as detailed as possible. If the pool requires multiple repairs, ask the pool contractor to break down each job along with its corresponding labor, material, and time frame.

Contractor's Handymen

A professional pool contractor will always have on hand an experienced group of handymen who specialize in different areas of pool construction and repair. If the pool contractor's handymen aren't up to your standards, it is best to look for another contractor for pool plaster resurfacing Chicago may have before your costs and work schedule spiral beyond your control. You should also insist on having a supervisor to direct the work and oversee quality checks.

Building Permits

City authorities will require building permits and other forms of authorization from you before you begin work on your pool. A good Chicago pool remodeling contractor will have vast knowledge about each permit that needs to be secured and possibly help you with it. Ask if the required permits are included in the estimate or if you would have to do the paperwork on your own.

VA Your home Financial loans Vs FHA Financial loans For Veterans ...

Several US veterans who are in the sector for a new residence may perhaps be struggling to figure out if a VA personal loan amount is an improved solution than an FHA personal loan level. Whilst there are lots of excellent offers for FHA loans out there, with no a doubt VA loans are the perfect choice for mortgages. What is the FHA?

Put together by President Theodore Roosevelt in the 1930s, the FHA refers to the Federal Housing Administration. This branch of the federal government was designed in the publish-Melancholy era as a means to improve the quantity of house proprietors between Individuals. At the time of its generation ? 1934 ? the amount was only forty%.

More Americans uneasy with political use of religion

Ted S. Warren / AP

Mitt Romney, right, bows his head in prayer as he stands on stage with local elected officials during a campaign rally on Feb. 3 in Elko, Nev. Nearly six in 10 Republican and Republican-leaning voters who favor Romney for the GOP presidential nomination say churches should keep out of political matters.

By James Eng, msnbc.com

In an election campaign season in which issues such as birth control and gay marriage have made headlines,?a growing number of Americans think political leaders are talking too much religion, according to a new national survey.

The survey released Wednesday by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press and the Pew Research Center?s Forum on Religion & Public Life finds signs of uneasiness over the mixing of religion and politics.

Nearly four in 10 Americans (38 percent) say there has been too much expression of religious faith and prayer from political leaders -- an all-time high since the Pew Research Center began asking the question more than a decade ago. Thirty percent say there has been too little.

Most Americans (54 percent) continue to say that churches and other houses of worship should keep out of politics. It?s the third consecutive poll conducted over the past four years in which more people have said churches and other houses of worship should keep out of politics than said they should express their views on social and political topics, according to Pew. That's also an about-face from 2006, when 51 percent of Americans believed churches should speak out and 46 percent said they should keep quiet.

The view that there is too much expression of religious faith by politicians remains far more widespread among Democrats than Republicans, and there are also divisions within the GOP primary electorate.

Fifty-seven percent of Republican and Republican-leaning voters who favor Mitt Romney (a Mormon) for the presidential nomination say churches should keep out of political matters. By contrast, 60 percent of GOP voters who support Rick Santorum (a devout Catholic) say that churches and other houses of worship should express their views on social and political questions.

And while more than half (55 percent) of Santorum?s supporters say there is too little expression of religious faith and prayer by political leaders, just one in four (24 percent) of Romney?s backers agree.

Santorum has worked hard on the campaign trail to court conservative Christian voters, and the former Pennsylvania senator has talked openly about the journey of his faith in?visits to evangelical churches.

Kimberly Conger, a political science instructor at Colorado State University who has studied the intersection of religion and politics, says the latest Pew findings are not surprising.

?Religious people's opinions on the relationship between religion and politics seem to be driven by their political identity more than their religious one.? These results bear that out,? she said by email to msnbc.com.

?Republicans are less likely to think there is too much religious talk by political leaders, and Republicans are hearing more such talk than Democrats.? It is also unsurprising that there has been a slight uptick in the overall number of people uncomfortable with religious talk since the Republican primary has had some significant religious overtones.?

As to whether politicians should steer clear of religion on the campaign trail, Conger says it depends.

?It's clear from the breakdown of religious and political groups that Rick Santorum ought to keep talking about religion as long as he's fighting for the Republican nomination. But if he were to win the nomination, he'd have to start appealing to independents, a key voting group that's uncomfortable with candidates' religious talk,? she says.

?They key challenge in the general election will be for Republicans to broaden their appeal by toning down religious talk. But the data suggest that Democrats face a similar if less intense challenge in broadening their appeal by appearing more welcoming to religious beliefs. Both sides will have a fine line to walk.?

The Pew telephone survey was conducted March 7-11 among 1,503 adults. You can read the full results here.

Business to Business PR | The Board Magazine

Sometimes called B2B PR is 100 per cent different to the sort of PR you hear about with celebrities, paparazzi and champagne. It?s even legal, decent and truthful! There?s a total culture difference and thankfully, editors of trade magazines are not out to sell copies based on sensationalism ? they?re in the business of providing high quality, relevant information to their readers about their market sector. Your market sector.

In fact, because most trade journals actually have a staff of only one and bit (the editor and a part time advertising sales rep), they are almost totally dependent on material submitted by companies. So if you?re providing a flow of high quality press releases and feature articles, or case studies, they?ll use it. If you don?t, they?ll use your competitors? material instead.

Running, as I do, a PR division, you?d probably expect me to tell you at this point that PR is a really difficult black art. But it?s not. Granted, we have learned a trick or two over the years which help, but the core skill is simple hard work and gentle sales technique.

The B2B PR game plan is:

Analyse the journals in the sector (remember that many are online magazines these days) and understand what the editors want.
Brainstorm the subjects on which your company has something to say and then speak to the relevant editors.
Write and distribute press releases on any real news stories you have ? but don?t send rubbish. This way, editors will come to know that your releases will be worth reading and they won?t get binned along with the hundreds of dreadful non-stories they receive every week.
Keep a steady flow of material heading towards the editors. Properly done, you should be able to feature in the key titles 10 months out of 12 ? maybe even 12/12!
Use a cutting service to make sure you pick up on all the coverage you obtain. And don?t just file it; you can reprint into a direct mail, put it on your website or hand out items, which makes excellent and authoritative ammunition for the sales force.
If you don?t want to do all of this yourself, then consider using a PR agency but only one that specialises in your sector. Ask one of the Editors for his/her recommendation.

Cost Effective B2B advertising is far from cheap with a typical colour page costing from ?1700 to ?2500 plus the cost of producing the advert. To be effective, it needs to be regular and in several magazines. Budgets need to be in the hundreds of thousands to be effective. B2B PR on the other hand can start from ?zero if you do it yourself and as little as ?15k a year using an agency. You can achieve editorial coverage valued at many times what you spend.

We regularly calculate the Advertising Equivalent Value for our own clients and frequently achieve Return On Investment from 1000 per cent and upwards.

Of course, there are also good reasons to advertise ? particularly when you need to get over a message which is not ?news?. And of course if no-one advertises there won?t be any magazines left for PR to work in. So it is a responsibility to support sector magazines with advertising too.

Never Far From Home in Retirement Living

Zara and George Robers returned to Philadelphia to move to a retirement community

Having lived in different parts of the world, Zara and George Roberts always knew they would return to their hometown of Philadelphia to move to a retirement community.

George and Zara Roberts have lived in many parts of the world, but they always knew no matter where their travels took them, they would return to their hometown in Philadelphia and eventually move to Cathedral Village, a Continuing Care Retirement Community.

Zara attended Wellesley, where she majored in English, while George studied International Relations at Yale. When they wanted to get married, George faced the proverbial question from his future father-in-law:? ?How are you going to support my daughter?? George started thinking about their future and spent several years in the Navy during the Korean Conflict.

After being discharged from the Navy, George started a career in the Foreign Service. His first assignment was in Bangkok, where Zara and George lived for two years. ?The city was heaven on earth. So beautiful, with great architecture and canals, and we loved being there,? said Zara.

The housing accommodations in Bangkok were very different from what they were accustomed to in Mount Airy, Pa., according to Zara. ?The house had no hot water and only a charcoal stove for cooking, but it came with five servants,? she recalled. ?The main duty of the gardener was to cut the grass and keep the snakes away.?

After Bangkok, George took an assignment in Laos for a year and a half, but because of the political climate, his family was not allowed to accompany him. Following his stint in Laos, the couple returned to Washington, D.C., where they purchased a home and spent four years raising their three children.

When duty called again, the entire family was off to Tanzania. George and Zara learned to speak Swahili, and the children enjoyed exploring the country. ?This was the best family post,? said Zara, who recalled their boys riding bikes around the countryside. The family also took many train trips and used an Embassy Land Rover to explore the surrounding area. Their adventures included trips to the Serengeti and a boat trip on the original African Queen.

But the family?s travels were far from over. Various posts would take them to Jamaica, Guyana, Panama, Japan, and eventually to the Middle East. Finally, after traveling around the globe, the Roberts returned to their roots. George became a Diplomat-in-Residence at St. Joseph?s University in Philadelphia and retired from that position in 1987.

The Roberts purchased a home in Mount Airy, the setting of many family memories for their children and grandchildren. But the couple knew this move would not be their last. ?When we returned to Mount Airy, we knew that moving to Cathedral Village was in our future,? George said. ?It was a natural transition for us. We are close to our friends and have access to everything we love about Philadelphia.?

Zara feels right at home in their spacious townhouse at Cathedral Village, which has been furnished with many of the treasures collected during their travels. She also enjoys the scenic community. ?We love our view. The grounds at Cathedral Village are beautiful,? she said.

From Thailand to Tanzania, George and Zara welcomed their many international experiences.? But, like most travelers, they know that sometimes coming home is the best part of the journey. ?Moving to Cathedral Village was the right decision,? the couple agreed. George and Zara may have been near and far, but their home in Philadelphia was never far from their minds.

Social media predicts unemployment spikes

By Eve Tahmincioglu

Some day we won?t have to wait until the monthly unemployment report to know what?s happening in the job market.

New research shows cyber chatter can predict the rise and fall of unemployment in real time.

Many of us complain about our financial health in social media, including everything from cutting back on healthcare to deciding not to buy that new car. Such discussions can provide a window into employment conditions months before traditional government statistics.

Those are the findings of a recent study?by software firm SAS and a United Nation's data initiative?UN Global Pulse?that looked at online discussions in the United States and Ireland over a two-year period and found increased social media talk about things such as postponing vacations or taking more mass transit predicted spikes in the unemployment rates in both countries.

It?s all about giving governments, social service groups and policy makers economic information while its happening so they?re not responding to drops in employment months after they occur, said Anoush Rima Tatevossian, a spokesman for the UN Global Pulse, a UN Secretary-General program to mine digital data in an effort to do good.

?We don?t have enough real time indicators of what?s happening to people as it?s happening,? he said, adding that the study?s findings are evidence digital data is a key source for finding out about the economic here and now.

The idea is similar to what Google has done with its flu tracking initiative, known as Google Flu Trends, that tracks searches related to flu terms in real time in an effort to pinpoint rates of flu nationally.

In the SAS-UN study, researchers looked at half a million entries on web forums and blogs over a two-year period to pinpoint fluctuations in the jobless rate, said I-Sah Hsieh, global manager, international development at SAS.

With this type of information, he continued, policy makers will be able to know right away if the steps they?re taking to deal with economic crises are working and they?ll be able to figure out how much time there is to implement new policies. ?With analytics we can quantify how much of a runway we have,? he explained.

In the United States, for example, an increase in angry chatter about workers? jobs preceded a spike in unemployment by three months, he maintained.

And there are certain leading and lagging indicators of a jobless uptick.

The researchers found an increase in the amount of hostile and depressed chatter in the United States predicted an unemployment spike four months out. On the other hand, talk about housing loss or car repossession happened two and three months, respectively, after a rise in the jobless rate.

In the future, such research will include popular social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, said Hsieh. ?We?re already starting talks on that, particularly Twitter.?

While he admitted this type of data mining might sound like Big Brother to some people, he stressed that researchers are just analyzing information that?s already in the public forum.

For the UN, it?s a chance to get in on the big data bandwagon and use the information to do deal with global economic issues, added Tatevossian. ?Everything is moving faster because the world is so connected now,? he pointed out. ?Economic shocks can appear in one part of the world and reverberate all over.?

Real-time data will uncover growing joblessness more quickly, he added, "and we'll be able to intervene and protect people faster.?

(AP) ? Dame Edna Everage, the Tony Award-winning drag act known for her purple hair and oversized rhinestone eyeglasses, will soon open her final stage show tour in Australia. It comes 57 years after her debut.

Barry Humphries, the actor and satirist who created Australia's self-proclaimed housewife-superstar, wants to take the farewell show "Eat Pray Laugh!" to Britain and New York over the next two years following the two-month Australian tour that begins in Canberra on June 22, his publicist Kerry O'Brien said Tuesday.

At 78, Humphries said the time had come to retire all his various alter egos from the stage, the most famous of whom is Dame Edna.

"She's a little weary of touring and strange hotels," Humphries told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio in Canberra, explaining his most enduring character's decision to retire.

Another of Humphries' characters, drunken Australian cultural attache Sir Les Patterson, will join Dame Edna on the farewell tour.

Dame Edna's career began as the more dour Mrs. Edna Everage when she first stepped onto the stage of a Melbourne University review in 1955 in Humphries' hometown of Melbourne.

She was "Auntie Edna" in the 1974 Australian comedy movie "Barry McKenzie Holds His Own," in which she was made a dame ? a British title that is the female equivalent of a knighthood ? as part of the plot during a cameo appearance by the then-Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam.

Dame Edna was a staple of television and stage in Britain and Australia before Humphries won a Tony Award in 2000 for his Broadway show "Dame Edna, The Royal Tour." Its sequel, "Dame Edna, Back with a Vengeance," was also nominated for a Tony, the leading U.S. theater award, in 2004.

Humphries was not available for an interview on Tuesday.

The show's producer, Dainty Group, described the show in a tongue-in-cheek statement as an all-singing, all-dancing spectacular in which Dame Edna promises to empower audiences as she meditates on the big issues of gender, ethnicity and climate change.

Physicists Discover Evolutionary Laws of Language

Speaking as a linguist (working on my Ph.D.) this is something of a tempest in a tea-pot. The most relevant use would be for glottochronology [wikipedia.org] - a field that's largely been abandoned by anyone seriously working on historical linguistics because of the various problems involved with that approach, including what the authors of the paper find, that the rate of word loss is not constant over time. They have a better idea of the rate of word loss, which could help improve glottochronology, but the method has a lot of flaws regardless.

Also, the question they're asking - how do words change over time, in terms of coining, becoming current, and becoming obsolete - really isn't a question historical linguists are that concerned about. Historical linguists are much more interested in how the forms of words change over time (phonological change), or how their function changes over time (grammaticalization), whereas the coinage and loss of words isn't often so important, especially on the large scale statistical level. Furthermore, this type of model probably handles languages with phenomena like avoidance speech [wikipedia.org] poorly, since that would change how and why words are kept or lost.

Their language sample is at heart a convenience sample - they happened to have access to lots of data in those three languages, and it is largely written data. Spanish and English are both related languages with very similar cultural contexts, while Hebrew is a strange choice in that is has an ancient history, but only quite recent revitalised usage. Whether most spoken interaction (which is what linguists tend to be more interested in) has even a tiny subset of the total number of words they are talking about is an open question and would be better tested against corpora with a large quantity of spoken data such as the British National Corpus or the International Corpus of English.

It's an interesting study, but if it hadn't been written by physicists I'm not sure if it would have ended up in Diachronica or the Journal of Historical Lingiustics, much less Science. Their "statistical rules" are interesting, but really not of any great use to wider linguistic inquiry. I think its import is really just exaggerated by the fact that science editors read Science and NOT most linguistics journals, and therefore they think it's really impressive.

Akira Yoshizawa: Why origami matters

Akira Yoshizawa, honored Wednesday with a Google doodle on his 101st birthday, helped introduce to the world an art form that has proven very useful in mathematics and engineering.

In 2000, when the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory wanted to design a telescope whose football-field sized lens could be folded into a small rocket, they approached an expert in a discipline not traditionally associated with aerospace and engineering: origami.?

Skip to next paragraph Eoin O'Carroll

Online News Editor

Eoin is the Online News Editor at the Christian Science Monitor. His interests include science, technology, digital media, and silly headgear.?

Recent posts

To be sure, Robert Lang, who has published 13 books on origami, also has degrees in engineering and physics and an extensive background in optics, but it was his expertise in folding paper that inspired the Eyeglass Telescope,?whose thin plastic lens, designed to be forty times larger than that of the Hubble Space Telescope, would open like an umbrella in space.?

Funding for the Eyeglass Telescope was discontinued before a full-scale version could be built, but the prototypes worked as predicted, showing that the Japanese art of paper folding has applications that go well beyond making paper cranes.?

As noted on Google's home page, Wednesday marks the 101st birthday of?Akira Yoshizawa, who is widely considered the grandfather of origami. He did not invent the practice ? origami emerged as a pastime during Japan's?Heian period (794-1185). But in his lifetime, Yoshizawa did more than anyone else to elevate it into an art form. Equally important, Yoshizawa created a wordless notation consisting of lines, dashes, arrows, and diagrams that allowed people all over the world, regardless of their native language, to learn origami. ???

And in doing so, he inspired generations of scientists and engineers to use origami principles for everything from noodle containers to domed stadium roofs. Look into the folds and creases of objects all around you and you'll see origami everywhere.

Paper folding has long been of interest to mathematicians, who found that geometric problems that are impossible to solve with a compass and straightedge, such as trisecting the angle, can be easily solved by folding paper. Origami has also introduced new puzzles for mathematicians to solve, such as the famous napkin folding problem, which explores whether it is possible to fold a square napkin in such a way that the perimeter of the resulting shape, when flattened, is greater than that of the original square (it turns out that it is possible using classical origami techniques).?

These mathematical insights have led to a host of applications. In 2003, the Nissan Motor company asked Japanese scientist and origami aficionado?Ichiro Hagiwara to design "crumple zones" that absorb impacts more efficiently.?Similarly, Robert Lang has helped design airbags that pack tighter and deploy faster, using algorithms originally developed by origamists to make paper insects.?

Another origami-inspired scientist,?Taketoshi Nojima of Kyoto University, has worked on structures and furniture designed to gently collapse during earthquakes.?

The principles of origami can also work on a small scale. Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are working on techniques to fold DNA?into microscopic structures that can serve as scaffolding for other nanoscale objects.

Not all of origami's applications are in the high-tech realm.?Japanese astrophysicist and origamist?Koryo Miura, who designed a collapsible solar array for a Japanese?satellite?that flew in 1995, has invented techniques that have been used on everything from beverage cans to those diamond-shaped tourist maps that fold and unfold easily.?

Lang, who designed Wednesdays Google doodle, decorated the letters in the logo with Yoshizawa's iconic butterflies. Said Lang of Yoshizawa's design for the insects:

"It is deceptive in its simplicity, but can express great subtlety in its shaping and attitude. The combination of simplicity and depth is part of the essence of origami, and is key to Yoshizawa's work and legacy."

A culinary union flourishes in South Korea

A cold soup serves as a cultural tie between North and South Korea.

Baengnyeong Island, S. Korea

? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.

As the mists lift, a hint of the forbidden comes into view just 10 miles across the rough coastal seas. This is one of South Korea?s frontline outposts, located in the Yellow Sea near the Northern Limit Line, the very edge that divides blood brother and political foe North Korea.

But it was not always this way ? before the partition of North and South, the island group was one of four that belonged to the mainland province visible through the mists to the north, now part of an enemy state.

Though cut off from their brethren for six decades, some older island residents still recall a time when they could cross freely. On a cultural level, they carry on a culinary legacy by hosting some of the most authentic versions of a cold noodle dish that also belongs squarely to the North: mul naengmyeon.

On Baengnyeong, in simple restaurants, this icy concoction of buckwheat noodles, beef broth, thinly sliced radishes, and half a boiled egg, is served to a steady stream of island residents, tourists, and South Korean soldiers.

While many visitors are eager to catch a glimpse of the forbidden through binoculars, vestiges of lasting ties lurk beneath the surface of life here. Until relatively recently, visitors from North Korea were said to regularly drift across the precarious waters.

It can be notably good for branding. It will allow for your viewers to become familiarized with you in way that you will never accomplish with only text and graphics.

It also provides an opportunity to present how the products or services will work. This may be excellent for products with the software business. This means that you can genuinely offer a possible client a sense for what they would certainly be getting whenever they decide to buy the product or service. It is good for software with a simple to use user interface. Certainly this method will not work so well with software that is sluggish and troublesome. Warrant issued for former Chico church staff member for child sex abuse

OROVILLE ? An arrest warrant has been issued for a former associate pastor of a Chico church charged with misdemeanor child molestation.

Jesse Daniel Ruhl, formerly of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, is being sought after he missed a Jan. 18 arraignment hearing in Butte County Superior Court for an alleged relationship with a 16-year-old girl that was first reported in February 2011.

The church is also being sued in local court for a 2002 incident where then-teacher and associate pastor David Joseph Jorgensen committed lewd acts on a female student when she was 14.

Reached for comment today, Ruhl's father, senior pastor Tim Ruhl, said he was unaware of the pending case against his son and did not want to comment further without knowing more.

Tim Ruhl is also a defendant in the civil lawsuit, along with the church and Jorgensen. He declined to comment on that case because it is currently being litigated. The attorney representing Ruhl and the church also declined comment.

In Jesse Ruhl's case, Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey said notice was sent to a Banning address in San Bernardino County. He said the defendant had been cooperative in the past, but there has been no recent contact. However, there also hasn't been any indication that Ruhl did not receive the notice.

Ramsey said Ruhl, 30, was a music teacher at the church's school and the girl and her family were church members. The girl would baby sit his children.

The relationship allegedly

became more intimate in October 2011, when they exchanged 20-30 intimate text messages. Ramsey said the relationship ended when Ruhl's wife discovered the messages.

According to a motion filed related to the warrant, a Chico police officer interviewed Tim Ruhl on Feb. 19, 2011. Tim Ruhl reportedly said his son confessed his actions to his family, which led to Jesse Ruhl's immediate termination as a pastor.

An officer interviewed the girl, who acknowledged text messages were sent. She and Jesse Ruhl also met several times each week for about 2-3 months. There was allegedly hugging, kissing and Ruhl allegedly touched her bottom.

Police also contacted Ruhl, who reportedly said he visited the girl at her residence when her parents were away. They also met in public places and at his house.

He allegedly confessed to touching the girl's breasts and bottom between five to 10 times, including some skin contact.

The warrant was issued to Chico police on Feb. 28. Bail was set at $3,000.

The next court date is for the civil lawsuit on April 13. Attorneys representing the church and Tim Ruhl are seeking summary judgment for a relationship that came to light in 2003.

In that case, a now-23-year-old woman is seeking damages for sexual battery, negligence, emotional distress and defamation.

According to the anonymous plaintiff's complaint, Jorgensen initiated inappropriate contact on her 14th birthday in April 2002. She claims he exploited her immaturity and abused his position of authority at the church to take advantage of her.

Jorgensen pleaded no contest in May 2003 to two felony counts of committing lewd acts upon a child, according to online court records. After he completed probation, he sought to have the crimes reduced to misdemeanors and had his record expunged in September 2006.

The victim is suing the church and Tim Ruhl for being negligent in hiring and supervising Jorgensen. She also claims that Ruhl failed to report Jorgensen's actions when she told him about it. The woman also alleges that Ruhl retaliated against her by expelling her six months before graduating high school and later claiming she was having a child out of wedlock.

In court filings, the defense for Ruhl and the church assert they are not liable for Jorgensen's intentional actions, which were outside of the scope of his employment. Also, Ruhl's handling of the woman's allegations were appropriate because they didn't rise to the level of reasonable suspicion.

The defense also asserts that the woman was expelled for violating the school's conduct code and that Ruhl did not defame her character.

There are currently two active defendants in the case. The plaintiff's attorney Larry Baumbach said Jorgensen is in default because he did not reply to the complaint, filed in December 2010.

According to Baumbach, when the allegations first came to light, the woman was forced to repeat her claims in a meeting with Ruhl and Jorgensen. Jorgensen denied the claims and accused her of lying.

Eventually, the woman's mother had her take a polygraph, which she reportedly passed.

According to a deposition of Ruhl, Ruhl said he confronted Jorgensen after the mother reported the results. Jorgensen admitted to the allegations and was terminated.

Baumbach said Ruhl reportedly expelled his client twice ? after she first reported the allegations and again before graduation. He said the later expulsion came about after she felt guilty after a serious off-campus drinking incident that she reported to the school.

Upcoming dates in the civil suit include the April 13 hearing on the defense's motion and a jury trial on May 21.
